A Science-Based Approach to Long-term Health

What is functional medicine?

Functional medicine is about finding the root cause of health issues. This personalised healthcare approach includes plotting a chronology of events with emergence of symptoms, biochemical test analysis and health coaching. Whilst we can find patterns between individuals, no two health journeys are identical and Functional Medicine is individualised healthcare at its best. It involves looking at lifestyle, diet, environment, and genetics to improve overall well-being and help prevent serious illnesses in the future. The focus is to work “upstream” rather than “downstream” to catch or contain more conditions from developing into a multitude of symptoms.

For example, a patient with a history of painful periods, fibroids, breast cancer, etc could benefit from a treatment that addresses oestrogen detoxification (subject to hormonal test results), not just target what may be perceived as different conditions. This upstream approach of treating root causes may minimise the need for invasive medical interventions and help manage further challenges ahead, such as debilitating menopause symptoms. Did you know that the menopause can be a lengthy process? Symptoms can develop and be felt for over 20 years! Invest in your health today.

Why choose functional medicine over conventional medicine?

⚕︎ Conventional medicine often treats symptoms with medication, while Functional Medicine is an approach that focuses on your unique chemistry and DNA as well as lifestyle behaviours, for long-term relief. Conventional medicine targets manifestations of disease downstream (pins and needles, pain, vomiting) by focusing on blocking the symptoms, and this is often short-term.

⚕︎ Conventional and Functional Medicine are not mutually exclusive. Many Functional Medicine practitioners qualified in allopathic medicine (treatment of symptoms). NHS practitioners, such as GPs and hospital doctors studied allopathic medicine. Functional Medicine is a post-graduate specialism for allopathic doctors, naturopaths, osteopaths and other health practitioners with a medical sciences degree (even if they do not hold the title of “Doctor” in the UK).

⚕︎ NHS practitioners rarely have the time for in-depth consultations which connect the dots between your mindset, past and current myriad of symptoms. Functional Medicine practitioners have time to listen to your story, and access to gold-standard biochemical tests, often not available on the NHS.

⚕︎ Functional Medicine personalises treatment based on you as a unique individual (genetics and lifestyle) rather than giving the same treatment to all individuals with, for instance, acid reflux, because the causes may vary.

⚕︎ It’s particularly useful for chronic conditions that many patients have been told don’t have a clear-cut solution.

⚕︎ It can help patients for whom conventional medicine does not appeal. Of most importance is to support patients with a treatment approach that resonates with their mindset, without being judgemental.

⚕︎ It requires high personal accountability, strong health values and compliance to treatment. This is not for everyone, and those who would prefer a more passive approach to treatment, or more sporadic, on and off sessions, may wish to focus on osteopathy and K-Laser therapy.

Who is suitable for treatment?

As with any course of treatment that digs deep, leaves no stone unturned and aims to be thorough, compliance is key. This model of healthcare is best suited to highly-accountable individuals, who follow all the steps on their journey to health.

There will be an assessment at the first consultation for suitability. To be on the programme, patients commit to:

✓ Carry out the biochemistry tests and take the supplements prescribed to them
✓ Attend every milestone appointment in order to ensure consistency of treatment and track progress.
✓ A commitment agreement is signed at the onset.
✓ An individual treatment plan.

Your Health, it’s Personal

"...I booked a functional medicine consultation and immediately felt reassured that my symptoms are treatable/manageable with the right testing, supplements and treatments going forward. It was one of the first times in 10 years I felt listened too and not ignored unlike our health system..."
